HOLIDAY TIPS: Sheriff's office warns of scam PDF Print E-mail

If the phone rings and someone on the other end of the line says they're from the DuPage County sheriff's office and they're looking for some money, you're probably being scammed, the sheriff says.

Some organizations are falsely claiming to represent the office of DuPage County Sheriff John E. Zaruba while soliciting money via telephone, according to a press release sent this week. Several residents have called Zaruba's office reporting callers claimed the money will go to the sheriff's office or be used to assist his deputies.

"Unfortunately, some police unions and other organizations use our name to give legitimacy to their causes, whatever they might be," Zaruba said in the release. "If you receive a phone solicitation from any organization, it is in your best interest to do some research before donating."

The sheriff's office also suggests taking these steps if there is doubt about an organization's legitimacy:

  • Never give your credit card number over the phone unless you know the organization is legitimate.
  • Ask for written information via mail before donating. If they say they cannot send you information, they may not be legitimate.
  • Do not send cash. It is easily negotiable.
  • Do not agree to allow the donation to be picked up at your front door.
